How the UK’s CyberFirst Model Could Transform Cyber Security Education in Japan
In the quest to bridge the cyber security talent gap, Japan can look to the UK’s CyberFirst initiative as a blueprint for success. Launched in 2015 by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), CyberFirst has become a cornerstone of the UK’s strategy to cultivate cyber security professionals. CyberFirst’s approach is holistic. It starts with early exposure, introducing students to cyber security concepts at an early age. With initiatives like the CyberFirst Girls Competition, it actively encourages female participation, addressing the gender imbalance in tech fields. By 2023, female scholarship recipients reached record levels, reflecting the program’s success in fostering inclusivity.
Collaboration with the private sector is another cornerstone. CyberFirst partners with over 100 companies, including IBM, HSBC, and NCD, which contribute resources, ambassadors, and lessons. This model not only enriches the learning experience but also builds a direct pipeline from education to employment.
For Japan, adapting the CyberFirst model would involve tailoring it to local needs. Establishing regional cyber security education hubs aligns well with this vision. Engaging companies as partners could provide the necessary support and resources to scale these efforts nationally.
