Ransomware Do's & Don'ts - A Practical Case Study on Ransomware Negotiations

Cartan McLaughlin, CEO of Nihon Cyber Defence (NCD)—the first Japanese cybersecurity company to receive certification from the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC)—will be speaking at this event.

When responding to ransomware attacks, it is crucial to consider not only technical analysis but also non-technical aspects such as mitigation strategies, attribution of attackers, internal and external communication, and legal responses. These elements are essential to protect a company’s reputation and ensure business continuity.

In this lecture, based on real-world experiences in responding to ransomware incidents both in Japan and globally, we will share decision-making processes under rapidly changing circumstances, including negotiations with attackers and payment considerations. We will provide concrete examples of “Do’s” and “Don’ts” learned from actual cases.

Every organization needs an incident response plan, a structured response framework, playbooks, and regular training. As one of the few expert groups in ransomware negotiations with a proven track record of supporting both Japanese and international governments, NCD offers these services. Ransomware is a matter of “when,” not “if.” We hope this lecture will help you strengthen your preparedness.
